Horizon Therapy Services work with children experiencing difficulties with fine and gross motor skills which are impacting negatively on their participation in activities of daily living.
Motor skills are movements and actions of the muscles. Typically, they are categorised into two groups: gross motor skills and fine motor skills. Gross motor skills are involved in movement and coordination of the arms, legs, and other large body parts and movements. They participate in actions such as running, crawling, swimming, etc. Fine motor skills are involved in smaller movements that occur in the wrists, hands, fingers, and the feet and toes. They participate in smaller actions such as picking up objects between the thumb and finger, writing carefully, and even blinking.
If your child is experiencing handwriting difficulties there a number of ways in which Horizon Therapy Services can help through a programme of occupational therapy. During the initial assessment your child will be screened to discover if they are able to demonstrate an age appropriate grasp type.
The type of grasp a child has form an important part of handwriting been legible with consistent pressure and consistent spacing without fatigue being evident. Also during the initial assessment, your child will be encouraged to participate in a range of Theraputty activities to screen for hand strength and muscle fatigue which may be influencing handwriting.
Following a comprehensive assessment an intervention plan will be provided to parents along with the option of a formal report to provide to school and/or medical professionals. Once you decide to participate in occupational therapy intervention, the occupational therapist will discuss with you how many appointments per week and for how many weeks therapy is likely to be required to allow for budgeting and also to maximise the effectiveness of intervention. We recognise that families are extremely busy however our main priority is to provide an effective intervention plan and resolve difficulties that your child is experiencing sooner rather than later.
